Hoover Dam Sunset by Carol Cottrell... The iconic Hoover Dam is located on the border of Arizona and Nevada in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. It was built during the Great Depression. The Colorado River supplies water to Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Las Vegas gets almost all of its water from Lake Mead. Lake Mead, the largest artificial lake in the United States, was made by the Hoover Dam when it blocked the Colorado River and flooded the Mojave Desert.
